ABSTRACT Medicinal plants have been an essential source of bioactive molecules and are widely used for both preventive and curative medicinal therapies for humans. Mangroves represent a unique category of tropical flora, specially adapted to thrive in loose, marshy soils, brackish water, and the occasional submersion by tides. Derris trifoliata Lour., the only common climber that grows in the mangroves of India was discussed here. Several compounds have been isolated from D. trifoliata such as Polyphenols, Alkaloids, Steroids, Flavonoids, Triterpenoids, Saponins and few other compounds. Unique isoflavonoid derivatives, rotenoloids and spirohomo-oxarotenoid compounds have also been isolated from its roots and seeds. In traditional medicine, several plant components were used to cure wounds, calculus, rheumatism, dysmenorrhea, and asthma. Many pharmacological properties including Antimalarial activity, Inhibition of trypsin and Chymotrypsin activity, Fish Poison and Insecticide, CNS Depressant Activity, Anti-microbial, Anti-oxidative and many other useful properties. This article describes about the Ethno biology, Phytochemical, and Pharmacological properties of D.trifoliata. Hence, this article provides a lead to the researchers for further research related to this plant.
