Investigation on Urban Planning and Sprawl in the MMR Area

Author Name : Daya Shankar Choudhary, Nikhil Dixit, Sudeshna Maity, Rajkiran Singh

ABSTRACT This research paper investigates urban sprawl in the MMR, analyzing its causes, impacts, and planning solutions. Using satellite imagery, GIS tools, and statistical models (e.g., Shannon’s Entropy, Compactness Index), it evaluates land use changes, population density, and infrastructure growth over two decades. Findings reveal dispersed, infrastructure-deficient growth, driven by poor governance and weak planning enforcement. The research recommends smart growth strategies like transit-oriented development (TOD), mixed-use zoning, and geospatial monitoring to promote sustainable, compact urban development. The study contributes to urban planning by offering evidence-based, policy-aligned solutions for managing sprawl in rapidly growing metro areas.
