Isolation and Screening of Probiotic lactobacilli for Antidiabetic Activity
Author Name : Kalpana Suryabhan Jaiswar, Ranjana Ganesh Khade
ABSTRACT
Diabetes is a syndrome that is characterized by a total or relative lack of insulin leading to persistent elevation of blood glucose as well as alteration in lipid and protein metabolism. Diabetes is also closely associated with several complicated chronic diseases such as diabetic cardiomyopathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic retinopathy. The present study was an attempt to isolate Lactobacillus spp and study their probiotic and antidiabetic characteristics. Lactobacilli were isolated from curd samples by enrichment isolation technique using MRS medium. The isolated lactobacilli were characterized on the basis of morphological, cultural and sugar utilization characteristics. All the lactobacilli isolates were evaluated for a number of probiotic characteristics like bile salt resistance, salt tolerance, survival in different pH, hydrophobicity of the cell surface and lactic acid production. The antidiabetic activity of isolated Lactobacilli was checked by alpha amylase inhibition assay. The isolated Lactobacillus spp showed a great potential to be used as antidiabetic agent in addition to their probiotic properties and are safe and fit for human gut.
