Janapadodhwamsa – A Conceptual Review
Author Name : Dr. Durga Shyamsingh Bais
ABSTRACT Janapadodhwamsa is a unique concept described in the classical Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita, referring to mass destruction of communities due to common etiological factors affecting large populations simultaneously. Unlike individual diseases caused by personal dietary and behavioral factors, Janapadodhwamsa arises from vitiation of shared environmental elements—Vayu (air), Jala (water), Desha (land), and Kala (season/time). Acharya Charaka elaborates that even individuals with different Prakriti, Satmya, and Ahara-Vihara may suffer from similar diseases when these universal factors become contaminated. The root cause is described as Adharma, leading to ecological and moral imbalance.
