ABSTRACT
Ayurveda, the science of life, describes many herbs in its classical literature. One such drug mentioned by Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, Kaiyyadeva Nighantu etc. is Jingini. Jingini is botanically identified as Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr. Previously known as Odina woodier of Anacardiaceae family. Known as Goddala mara, Goddi mara in Kannada, its use is well known for diarrhoea in folklore practice and is a popular timber source of commercial importance. Stem bark of Jingini [Lannea coromandelica (Houtt.) Merr.] was collected from Ripponpet, Hosanagara Taluk, Shivamogga District, Karnataka in Sharad ritu (November). Organoleptic evaluation, microscopic analysis, physicochemical analysis, preliminary phytochemical screening, phytochemical quantification, TLC and HPTLC fingerprinting of STEM BARK OF JINGINI [LANNEA COROMANDELICA (HOUTT.) MERR.] were performed. Rasa assessment upheld the Kashaya Rasa as mentioned classically. The preliminary pharmacological analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, tannins, phenols, saponins, triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids. The phytochemical screening and presence of Alkaloids and Flavonoids in higher percentages is noteworthy for inferring the therapeutic possibilities of the drug.
