Kayachikitsa Approach to Lifestyle Associated Disorders

Author Name : Dr. Aftab M. Aga, Dr. Rupa Bhatt

ABSTRACT

The increasing prevalence of chronic disorders has created a need for therapeutic approaches that consider variations in disease presentation, individual susceptibility, lifestyle and long-term disease progression. Conventional disease classification primarily focuses on identifying and treating a defined disease entity; however, clinical response may vary considerably among individuals with the same diagnosis. Ayurveda approaches disease assessment by considering both the characteristics of the disease and the condition of the individual. Kayachikitsa incorporates this principle through Rogi Pariksha and Roga Pariksha, along with assessment of Prakriti, Agni, Bala, Dosha, Dushya, Srotas, Nidana and Samprapti. These parameters help in understanding the individual pattern of disease manifestation and in selecting appropriate therapeutic measures.

The present review discusses the relevance of this individualized Kayachikitsa approach in the management of chronic disorders in the contemporary clinical setting. The role of Nidana Parivarjana, appropriate Ahara-Vihara, Shamana, Shodhana and Rasayana is considered in relation to individualized treatment planning. This approach shifts clinical assessment from diagnosis alone towards understanding the interaction between the individual, disease and contributing factors, thereby providing a broader framework for the management of chronic disorders.
