Legitimate Expectation: Bridging the Gap between Administrative Power and Citizen Rights

INTRODUCTION Administrative law deals with the power and the functions of the administrative authority and also it deals with the remedies available to the aggrieved persons when the power is abused by the authorities. The main function of the administrative law is to keep the governmental powers in the limits of the law and to protect private rights and individual interest of the citizens. Various principles of administrative law have emerged through the judicial activism or the judicial pronouncements. The courts have a very crucial role in the development of the administrative law and upholding the principles of natural justice. The principles of natural justice is nothing but the principles which have been existed from time immemorial for the ensuring a just and fair administration. The principles of natural justice have gained its importance over the time and are considered to be a tool to control or check the abuse of powers by the government or the administrative bodies. The principle of natural justice incorporates within itself various rights available to the citizens to ensure the fair and just legal process. In the list of various principles and doctrines for the development of the judicial review of the administrative actions, doctrine of legitimate expectation has also found its place in various legal systems.
