Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich as A Perfect Exemplar of Psychological Realism
Author Name : Prikshit Singh, Dr. Anu Rathee
ABSTRACT
One of Leo Tolstoy's best works is The Death of Ivan Ilyich. It depicts how individuals genuinely feel and behave when faced with death and mirrors real life. The author illustrates how the protagonist's family and friends behave in every area of his life by placing him in a scenario of impending death.Furthermore, in addition to the realism throughout the book, this novella offers "psychological realism" as the most advanced degree. The representation of the characters' psychics also depicts the interrelated development of the protagonist's psyche in the novel. As we advance through it, we find the situation of a man facing the reality of life. Tolstoy portrays highborn society as an assortment of self-intrigued, materialistic, shallow people. The individuals from the highborn community care little for good human connections. The manufactured life is deceit that conceals the genuine meaning of life and leaves one afraid and alone at the moment of death. In contrast, actual existence is defined by sympathy and compassion. It sees others as individuals with their thoughts, feelings, and desires rather than tools for an aim. Acknowledgment of death and comprehension of the genuine capricious nature of life, considers certainty, gently, and even bliss at the hour of death. More than anything else, the story may be seen as an illustration of the significance of passing on by living great. Tolstoy tried his best to convey that every individual's liability is to comprehend the duality of oneself and live so that the less significant real-life adjusts to the more fundamental profound presence.
