Linezolid:-A Brief Introduction

ABSTRACT In 1978, oxazolidinones were introduced for their effectiveness in controlling plant infections, with Linezolid considered the main representative in this class of antibiotics. After six years, the documented significantly improved antibacterial properties of these oxazolidinone compounds marked them as the primary true lead compounds(1) within the oxazolidinone family. A lead compound, defined as a substance indicating pharmacological potential for therapeutic development, initiated discussions leading to the development (2)of piperazine derivatives, as demonstrated in studies by Barbachyn et al(2). These selected compounds, known for exceptional antibacterial activity and a favorable safety profile, were further refined. Linezolid, identified as a lead compound after extensive(3) assessments at Pharmacia in 1996, gained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration in 2000. Over the last 40 years, oxazolidinones have emerged as a genuinely new class of antibiotics now utilized in clinics(4).
