Motivation of Police Personnel to Join the Greyhounds Unit of Telangana Police Department

ABSTRACT
This Study is regarding the motivation of police personnel to join the Greyhounds Unit (Elite Commando Force) of Telangana Police Department. Greyhounds Unit was established in the United Andhra Pradesh at Hyderabad in the year 1989 to deal with the problem of Naxalite Extremism. Grave risk to the life of Police Personnel is involved in the course of the operations. Initially 25% Basic Pay+DA (Special Allowance) was offered as an Incentive in order to motive Police Personnel to join Greyhounds Unit on deputation from other Police Units as there is no direct recruitment to Greyhounds Unit. This Special Allowance has been increased from time to time and it is now 50% of Basic Pay + DA and 10% of Basic Pay for the Police Personnel working in the rank of DSP and below. The scheme of Accelerated Promotion was introduced for the Police Personnel who perform outstanding work in the anti-extremist field.
This study conducted research on the motivating factors such as work itself, special allowance and Accelerated promotion with respect to the motivation of Police Personnel to join Greyhounds Unit. Statistical Test such as Henry Garret Ranking Method and kendall’s W Test have been utilized. Hypothesis is tested. Test results revealed that there is a significant difference between the motivating factors. Special Allowance as a motivating factor has been given First Rank and it is followed by Accelerated promotion which got Second Rank. The Motivating factor Work itself got Third Rank. The study found that there is a high valance for Monetary Rewards with respect to Police Personnel who opt to join Greyhounds Unit on deputation.
