Narratives of Manori Landscape Weaving together Communities, Their Alterations and Adaptations

ABSTRACT The ‘Narratives of Manori’ is an explorative study. It focuses on land, water and cultural fabric, and their interdependence for sustenance through a collection of interlinked life stories of people. It intervenes in the premise of community by altering, retaining and designing open spaces for conserving culture, occupation and livelihood to conserve ecology. It aims to understand to role of narratives in people and landscapes, by studying the communities, their adaptations and alterations to the natural features of Manori. The study consists of three parts: The first part is an understanding of the terminology ‘narratives’ with examples, its types and mode of representation. The second part is about Mumbai and studying the nature of its fringes through Manori Island. The purpose of this inquiry is to follow the interconnecting and colliding landscape narratives and images, of people whose livelihoods and practices have been composed and produced as a result of the natural resources available on the island leading to a sustainable module. Thirdly, an intervention through landscape design as a possible solution to the research conducted.
