Non-linear Narrative Structure and Resilience of Chippewa Culture in Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicin
Author Name : Professor Brajesh Sawhney
ABSTRACT This research article examines Louise Erdrich's novel, Love Medicine, as a masterpiece in contemporary Native American literature. The focus is on Erdrich's innovative use of a non-linear narrative structure, which extends beyond mere stylistic choice to become a thematic cornerstone. The departure from conventional linear storytelling is explored through the interconnected stories within the novel, revealing a deliberate mirroring of the cyclical nature inherent in Native American oral traditions. This departure serves as a unique lens through which the complexities of identity and resilience are explored. The article contends that Erdrich's narrative technique enhances the richness of the portrayal of Chippewa life on the Turtle Mountain Reservation, contributing to the novel's brilliance.
