P.B. Shelley’s Ode to the West Wind: An Ecocritical Reading

ABSTRACT Ecocriticism has a special importance in modern world. This critical theory can spread awareness to the readers to be eco-conscious. Today our environment is a threat and it is certain that literature can aware the humanity of this situation. Environmental crises like Global Warming, water and oxygen crises, pollution, etc are just some issues that need to be addressed. Tsunami, cyclones and earthquakes are causing substantial damage to life and property. These environmental issues cannot be overlooked. Ecocriticism tries to read the literature with the view point of the environment and unearth the environmental concerns of the writers. Literature can prove to be an important medium to resolve the present time ecological crises. We have already seen that literature has played an important role in different social and political issues like rights of women, rights for black men and French Revolution etc and its holistic approach has made it succeed in these movements. So it can be said that literature can play an effective role when it comes to the ecological problems.
