Author Name : Sakshi Upadhyay, Nitya Durve

ABSTRACT

Undoubtedly, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted various aspects of our lives, prompting the suspension of numerous activities. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that architecture can play a crucial role in offering solutions during times of epidemics. In the twenty-first century, we have witnessed the rapid spread of six diseases, including acute respiratory syndrome, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, Ebola, Avian Influenza, Swine Influenza, and most recently, the novel coronavirus outbreak. This paper illustrates how parasitic architecture could act as an alternate solution for space crunch in times of pandemic. "Parasitic architecture" generally refers to the practice of adding temporary or semi-permanent structures onto existing buildings or urban spaces various purposes. These additions are usually intended to utilize existing resources and infrastructure creatively. In the context of a pandemic, some architectural adaptations and interventions may become more relevant due to the unique challenges faced by society.
