Performance Analysis of Low Carbon Concrete with Calcium Lignosulfonate
Author Name : Prof. Mohit Sahu, Jiya Jaiswal, Deepika Verma, Vijay K. Saket
ABSTRACT This research addresses the significant environmental impact of the construction industry by investigating a "Low Carbon Concrete" strategy. The primary objective was to evaluate the feasibility of reducing Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) content by 10%-directly mitigating CO2 emissions-while maintaining or enhancing structural integrity through the integration of Calcium Lignosulfonate (CLS). CLS, a bio-based byproduct of the wood pulping process, was utilized as a sustainable chemical admixture. The study involved a comparative analysis of a control mix (100% PPC) against experimental mixes containing 90% cement with varying CLS dosages (0.2%, 0.5%, and 0.7% by weight). Experimental data focused on both fresh and hardened properties, including workability (Slump, Compaction Factor, and Vee-Bee tests) and compressive strength at 7, 14, and 28 day curing intervals. The results demonstrate that CLS acts as a highly efficient plasticizer, significantly improving workability and particle dispersion. Notably, the 0.2% CLS dosage achieved a 28-day compressive strength of 19.88 N/mm2, surpassing the control mix despite the reduced cement binder. These findings validate that CLS is a viable "Waste-to-Wealth" solution for eco-efficient infrastructure.
