Pharmaceutical Assessment of Pterocarpus Santalinus L. Gum as a Binding agent in Tablet Formulation

ABSTRACT Pterocarpus santalinus L. commonly known as Red Sandalwood belongs to the family Fabaceae. In the traditional system of medicine, the decoction from the heartwood is attributed various medicinal properties.Development and evaluation of new excipients for use asbinding agents in tablet formulations is of continued interest. The application of gums from various sources, as pharmaceutical excipients, has gained attention in recent times. These gums generally are polysaccharides obtained from woody and non-woody plant parts. Plant gums are used as binders, suspending agents and sustained released polymers for the formulation of pharmaceutical dosage forms .
