ABSTRACT Children’s literature brings out the hidden imaginative minds of the younger generation, develops language skills, showcases moral values, and nurtures a love for reading. Matilda by Roald Dahl is one such literary work that fits into the aspects of children’s literature. The plot revolves around a highly intelligent young girl who lives with her narcissistic parents and undergoes many obstacles. The theoretical theme of oppression is depicted in most of Roald Dahl’s books including Matilda. In this book, the protagonist’s form of oppression is depicted through authoritarian figures. The plot shows the power of resilience, education, and solidarity to overcome tyranny, which leads to the downfall or ill fate of the oppressors and the triumph of justice and empowerment for the oppressed. This research paper aims to delve into the theoretical themes present in Roald Dahl’s Matilda, faceting on the dynamics of power between adults and children, the role of education and opportunity, family institutions versus chosen family, the power of fighting injustice, and the depiction of women’s financial security and ethics. By examining these theoretical themes, this research article understands the narrative aspect used by the author to convey deeper societal messages and criticize traditional power structures. This researcher opens up on how the protagonist overcomes the dynamic of authority figures in the novel and uses the power vested in them to oppress and control the protagonist. The analysis of how the female characters navigate their way through financial independence and ethical dilemmas gives an insight into the narrative’s feminist undertones and its support for women's empowerment.
