ABSTRACT
Objective: Objective of the present work was to perform phytochemical screening and qualitative and quantitative estimation of total alkaloids and phenolic content of hydroalcoholic extract of fruits of belanites roxburghi, which would give an indication of the suitability of leaves as alternative sources of medicine in these plant species.
Methods: Pliminary phytochemical screening was done by using reagents and active constituents available were determined. Total alkaloids present was determined by colourimetry with absorbance at 470nm and compared with Atropine as standard. Total phenolics were estimated by follin-ciocaltue’s method using Gallic acid as standard.
Results: The active constituents present in hydroalcoholic extract of fruits of belanites roxburghii are phytosterols, triterpenes, glycosides, saponins and alkaloids. Total alkaloidal content was found to be 40mg/gm and total phenolic content was found to be 5.10mg/gm.
Keywords: Alkaloids, belanites roxburghi, follin-ciocaltue’s, phenolics, saponins etc.
