Real Time Operating Systems in Embedded Applications: Design and Implementation

Author Name : Sandeep Kumar Reddy Anumareddy, Dr. P. Janardhan Sai Kumar, Sk. Moula

ABSTRACT Real-time operating systems (RTOS) play a critical role in the functionality and performance of embedded applications, where timely and deterministic responses to events are paramount1 . This research delves into the design and implementation of RTOS in embedded systems, examining key characteristics such as minimal latency, predictability, and resource efficiency. The study outlines various RTOS architectures, including monolithic and microkernel designs, and evaluates their impact on system performance. Implementation strategies are explored through case studies in diverse domains such as automotive systems, medical devices, and industrial automation. Key challenges addressed include task scheduling, inter-process communication, and memory management. The research also investigates the integration of RTOS with hardware-specific features and the trade-offs between using commercial off-the-shelf solutions versus custom-built systems. Performance metrics and benchmarks are used to compare different RTOS implementations, highlighting their suitability for specific embedded applications. The findings provide insights into optimizing RTOS for critical real-time requirements, ensuring reliability, and enhancing the overall efficiency of embedded systems. This research contributes to the field by offering a comprehensive framework for RTOS design and implementation, supporting the development of robust and responsive embedded applications.
