Resistance Against Oppression: A Postcolonial Dilemma of Anita Nair’s Women

Author Name : Jyoti

ABSTRACT Drawing on postcolonial feminist theory and concepts related to women’s writing, this paper examines Indian women’s resistance against various experiences of oppression as represented in the postcolonial novels Ladies Coupé and Mistress by Anita Nair. The Indian Novel in English in the pre-Independence period, mostly remained maledominated. A few women novelists who emerged at the end of the nineteenth century were an exception. General issues concerning women have always been the thematic focus of women writers over the ages. Feminism, alienation, identity crisis and individual’s struggle for freedom gradually became the major thrust areas in literature created by them. The appearance of the new, fully awakened woman, ready to fight against the patriarchal norms in order to live a meaningful life is witnessed in the novels of women novelists of the post-independence era. They are able to sensitively portray a world that has in it, women rich in substance, their women are real flesh-and-blood protagonists who make you look at them with awe with their relationship to their surroundings, their society, their men, their children, their mental make-ups and themselves.
