Resource Recovery by Wastewater Recycling Using Pinch Analysis

Author Name : Konala Kartik Reddy, Jyoti Singh

ABSTRACT

The acute fresh water crisis across the globe is forcing industries to purchase fresh water at exaggerated prices or think for alternate sources for sustainability & survival which includes finding ways for recycling & reuse of water which otherwise would have been discharged freely into drains only to find their way into rivers & oceans. About 71% of the global population live under conditions of severe water scarcity at least one month of the year [1]. This paper highlights the means by which industrial units could reduce fresh water consumption by Recycling, Reuse, Regenerative reuse & Regenerative recycling. Water pinch analysis is a mathematic optimization technique for integration of water consuming activities & process and formulating strategies for reuse of the generated wastewater. The water pinch analysis tool is based on the numerical approach known as cascade analysis. Case study of a pharma industry has demonstrated a fresh water saving of nearly 25%.
