Response of the Muslims of Basirhat subdivision towards the Partition of Bengal (1905)

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to explore the role of the Muslims of Basirhat subdivision during the period of the Partition of Bengal (1905). The Partition of Bengal was a momentous event in the history of India and Bengal. The Indian National Congress launched the swadeshi movement to oppose the partition of Bengal. The ideas of swadeshi and boycott that emerged from this issue became an important weapon that was utilized in the freedom struggle. In fact, the people of every corner of Bengal were very active with this issue and expressed their opinions in and against this. As far as Basirhat subdivision is concerned, the common people of the subdivision spontaneously responded to antipartition as well as swadeshi-boycott issue to weak the ‘divide and rule’ policy pursued by the British. In fact, from the very beginning of the British colonial rule in Bengal the subdivision became fertile place for the nationalist movement. The Muslims of this subdivision like Moulvi Mujibur Rahman, Maulana Akram Khan expressed their deep concern on the partition issue and strongly opposed the partition scheme of the British Raj.
