Author Name : Syed Muzamil Khurshid, Prof. Tareak Ahmed Rather

ABSTRACT

Uzbekistan passed through sundry epochs throughout the history and hence witnesses variegated culturaldiversity. The era of Islam affected considerably the lives of Uzbek people.Which changed the lifestyle of Uzbeks altogether. Although great scholars and legends popped up from the land of Uzbekistan during Islamic period, nevertheless women’s subjugation surfaced and her liberty faded away over a period of time. Soviets colonized the land and brought ray of hope for women with subject of modernization. This resulted in the women’s emancipation, self -reliance, independence and gender equality in whole Central Asia generally but in Uzbekistan particularly. They desacralized the society from religion and proscribed all places of worship viz. mosques, churches etc. Soviets denounced the traditions, cultures and other rituals which had become part of Uzbek life. After independence of Uzbekistan, deep rooted traditions started to emerge with revival of Islam and people who were oppressed of their faith started to express it freely. All those traditions and cultures which had remained hidden in the society of Uzbeks reappeared and a sort of nation building along with Uzbek nationalism surfaced. The present paper highlights all those tradition, cultures and rituals which showed resurgence after Soviet dissolution in Uzbekistan.
