Public Health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities, and individuals[1].It helps in arriving at community diagnosis which helps stakeholders of the country in solving community health problems. It empowers people in taking informed decisions towards improvement of health status of the community.
Public health has seen tremendous rise since the past few decades. Public Health professionals play a vital role in various activities of different National Health Programmes (National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), National Vector Borne Disease Programme (NVBDCP), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS), National Mental Health Program (NMHP), National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), National Programme for Prevention and Control of Fluorosis (NPPCF), National programme for Health Care of Elderly, etc.) such as health promotion through behaviour change with involvement of community, civil society, community based organizations, media etc, conducting outreach camps in the community, management of chronic non-communicable and communicable diseases, capacity building at various levels of healthcare. Advancement in Public health allowed India to eliminate various diseases such as Smallpox, Yaws, Guinea worm, and Polio.
