ABSTRACT Rizatriptan nasal powder represents a new formulation of the drug, specifically designed for the acute treatment of migraine: this means a non-oral option for the patient-a very interesting one in those cases in which nausea and sometimes vomiting are present at the time of the attack. The immediate absorption, without passage through the gut, may translate into faster absorption and the onset of pain relief than with the traditional oral triptans. Other pharmacokinetic studies have established that the Rizatriptan nasal powder reaches peak plasma concentrations faster and is thus linked to faster effects in the relief of symptoms associated with a migraine. The clinical studies demonstrated a high amount of efficacy of Rizatriptan nasal powder, as most patients felt relief of pain within 30 minutes or two hours from when the drug was administered. Moreover, it is patient-friendly in that its administration does not require the intake through a mouth route, which may be problematic for someone who cannot tolerate oral drug intake.
