Role of Religion and Caste in Indian Politics: An Analysis

ABSTRACT India is a secular country and the constitution allows for religious freedom. Religion plays a very important role in Indian politics. It helps the political parties to influence the voter behavior. In India despite partition on the basis of religion, the country resolved to be a secular state and promulgated its Constitution in 1950. Indian politics has been fought around religion. Anything that is overdone leads to violence. The Hindu explains whether political parties can campaign on the basis of religion and caste. In India secularism was distinct in an inclusive manner, it is the partition of religion from politics and the state, the conduct of religion as a private matter for the individual, state impartiality towards or equal respect for all religions, absence of discrimination between followers of different religions, and vigorous conflict to communalism
