Role of Women in Household Income Generation

ABSTRACT

The general premise of the paper focusses on the fact that productive income generated as an outcome of  women’s participation in household activities is the most invisible aspect leading to indirect estimation of national income and women ‘s economic empowerment. Owing to subjective nature of national income; non-tangible components like home-maker’s efforts are devoid of mention in its estimation. This seldom subjugates the position of women and poses a question on legitimacy of their economic status.A self-structured questionnaire was implemented on MIG households reflecting their participation in home management activities. The results directs towards interesting findings where generation of real income leads to generation of psychic income. Non-tangible income generated, being recognized, acknowledged  and regarded  substituted one’s feeling of compromise on leisurely activities  with high accomplishment  levels  in perception of the self –image.
