INTRODUCTION
Sugarcane juice is a instant energy booster juice extracted by a natural source called sugarcane. Sugarcane juice is usually extracted by simply just pressing the sugarcane in between the rollers and a popular drink served in the hot summers. Packed with a efficient source of sugar it is also a great source of essential nutrients. The juice is available only in the parts of sugarcane cultivation. The reason is the juice gets degrade easily by enzymatic actions. Unprocessed juice offers idealized conditions for the development of microorganisms. The fresh sugarcane juice has a shorter shelf because of browning and fermentation in presence of enzymes, yeast and bacteria.
The project work mainly focuses on the enhancement of shelf life of sugarcane juice by membrane filtration. Membrane technology assures low color degradation Use of ultrafiltration to remove the spoilage causing micro-organisms .the membranes have a very small pore size which works efficiently. Ultrafiltration a subclass of membrane filtration in which forces like pressure or concentration gradients lead to a separation through a semipermeable membrane.it is a specialized membrane filtration technology. It uses hydrostatic pressure forces a liquid against a semipermeable membrane. The types of membrane usually studied are tubular membrane, hollow fibre membrane and flatsheet membrane.
