Significance of Algal Biodiversity Profiling in Surrounding Ecosystem

Author Name : Denzil John Godin

ABSTRACT

In ecological perspective algal community are significant florawhich playskey roles in ecosystem function viz. primary producer in food chain, management of nutrient cycle, organic carbon production etc. Their species existence, composition, variety and abundance in different ecosystems chiefly depend upon physico-chemical characteristics of water as well as other biotic and abiotic factors. Algae also significantly contribute to the carbon pool of an ecosystem by sequestering and cycling carbon, therefore, algal abundance in an ecosystem also reflects its carbon stock dynamics and simultaneously pollution load also.Study of qualitative and quantitative abundance of certain algal species directly reveals the physico-chemical and biological condition of the ecosystem.Thereforealgal biodiversity profiling could be utilized as a natural indicator of water pollution, climate change and effects of anthropogenic activity on surrounding ecosystems.

Keywords: Algae, biodiversity profiling, water pollution, climate change, ecosystem.
