Sikkim under the British Influence (1889-1947)

ABSTRACT

The strategic importance of Sikkim as a trade route to Tibet and buffer state in between Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan turned it into the ‘protectorate’ state of British India. Thus from, 1889-1947 Sikkim firmly remained under the influence of British India. Subsequently, numbers of British Political Officers were appointed in Sikkim. Political Officers like John Claude White and Charles Bell having exclusive powers influenced political, social, and as well the economic history of Sikkim. It was under the Political Officer White changes in the administration appear and so as the institutions in land was introduced. Moreover, Sikkim under the British influence witnessed tremendous changes in every aspects of society including the land ownership patterns.
