Social Entrepreneurship and Employment generation; Evidence from Kerala, India

ABSTRACT Social entrepreneurship plays an important role in providing growth and employment opportunities to the vulnerable sections of the society through sustainable business solutions. The present study aims to understand the nature and type of employment created by social enterprises in Kerala. Through an open ended interview schedule and cross sectional survey method, 10 case studies were conducted to form the Methodology and analysis of the study. Results indicated that the social enterprises outperform the typical mainstream firm in India in terms of gender ratios and social entrepreneurship can be a better model for employment generation, particularly to people for non-privileged sections of the society, it is providing mainly part time casual wage labour. The study suggested social enterprises should focus on the creation of more full time formal employment which gives security to employees and will provide more sustainable livelihood for the beneficiaries.
