ABSTRACT
Roads are an integral part of the transport system. A country’s road network should be efficient in order to maximize economic and social benefits. They play a significant role in achieving national development and contributing to the overall performance and social functioning of the community. This paper examines the social status of PMGSY beneficiaries in Belagavi District of Karnataka; and suggests measures for the improvement of socio-economic status of PMGSY beneficiaries in general and in Belagavi district in particular. The primary data were collected by interview schedules among the beneficiaries of PMGSY in four taluks of Belagavi district. Simple statistical tools like Percentage and ratios have been employed for the analysis of data. The main findings reveal that of the total sample beneficiaries of PMGSY a significant proportion are Hindus, followed by Muslims and the Others. The data on caste status indicates that a majority of 78 per cent of sample beneficiaries of PMGSY belong to other backward caste. While 10.25 per cent and 7.50 per cent of sample beneficiaries of PMGSY belong to Scheduled caste and Scheduled tribe category, respectively. While a majority of the sample beneficiaries were between the age group of 31-60 years, followed by above below 30 years and 61 and above years .It has been found that out of 480 sample beneficiaries of PMGSY a majority of 38 per cent beneficiaries are illiterates, whereas the rest of 62 per cent beneficiaries of PMGSY are literates. The occupational status of the sample beneficiaries indicates at the aggregate level a majority of 42.25 per cent beneficiaries of PMGSY are engaged in non-agricultural activities. The study suggests that more dynamic and practical projects based upon the need of the poor people should be implemented with PMGSY in the rural areas so as to provide benefit to the larger strata of population thereby leading to socio-economic development.
