Stepped Chute with upgraded Stilling cum Collection Chamber as Energy Dissipator
Author Name : Abhishek Verma, Mayank Rai
ABSTRACT
Steped chutes are the civil structures provided to safely discharge runoff with high potential head to the downstream surface without erosion. The stepped chute is designed after studying the rainfall data and pattern of last 2 to 5 decades based on availability of rainfall data, then rainfall intensities are calculated for different return periods and then runoff is calculated. Now, the calculated runoff is used for designing of steps height and length. When the runoff with high head falls over the steps, energy is dissipated at each step and then the runoff reaches the chute bottom where stilling cum collection system is provided to break the remaining head to the acceptable limits so that it can be further discharged safely at the downstream surface without affecting it. The main function of the stilling cum collection chamber is to collect and hold the runoff for a while to stabilize the flow, then it can be further channelized towards the disposal site with the help of a ditches or closed conduits. These structures are usually provided in the hilly regions where downstream surface requires safety against erosion and landslides, also these structure helps in discharging large volume of runoff to the safe disposal sites without affecting the surrounding or nearby areas.
