Sustainability Assessment of a Glass Industry by Multi-Criteria Decision Making Method

Author Name : Mr. Talha Munshi, Mr. T. Z. Quazi

ABSTRACT

The Industrial Revolution of the late eighteenth century sparked unprecedented economic growth. Over the last two centuries, there has been a dramatic increase in living standards and real income, predominantly in Europe, North America and the Pacific. More recently, China, India and other developing countries have entered a period of high growth. During the last two decades, growth in these countries made up 80% of the increase in industrial production. The glass industry is a continuously growing one. Global demand for Glass is growing at a fast pace, and is expected to reach nearly 140 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, more than double its value since 2008. Glass is an inevitable component of the Indian economy, where it accounts for more than 21 million metric tons of consumer products. The contribution to environmental pollution due to glass manufacturing processes has not been studied intensively, as Emission control is one of major concern in glass manufacturing industries. This study focuses on Sustainability Assessment of a Glass Industry by a Multi-Criteria Decision Making Method. In this paper different sustainability aspects like Environmental factors, technical factors and Economical aspects for a glass industry were studied using MCDM method named Weighted Sum Method (WSM). The Environmental factors and technical factors were analyzed by studying data from Furnace stack, Diesel generator stack and Ambient air, whereas Economical aspect through annual reports published by the industry. These results helps us to understand which sub factors have contributed more or less in total score every year. The results shows ranking given for different sub factors, where the lower rank was given to to those sub factors whose score was minimum and higher rank was given to those sub factors whose score was maximum according to the Weighted sum method (WSM).
