ABSTRACT
A new class of Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) isthe leading class of solvents whose utilization is sizable. These DESs are composed of hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and hydrogen bond donor (HBD), which appear as an auspicious substitute for ionic liquids and organic solvents. DESs are cheap, safe, non-toxic, biodegradable, and bio-compatible and hence fall in the category of green solvents. Synthesis of DES is an example of a reaction with 100% atom economy. Tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB)-itaconic acid-based DES was prepared by mixing tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) and itaconic acid in 1:1 molar ratio at 86o- 88 °C until it formed a homogenous liquid. It was cooled to RT and used without any further purification. Its characterization is of primal importance to comprehend its structure and chemistry. It was characterized by using the most commonly used spectroscopic characterization techniques like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) along with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The eutectic point of this combination is illustrated with the help of a phase diagram. A study of physical properties and further investigation into the applications of this newly synthesized DES as solvents in TLC, HPLC, nanoscience, and even in extraction processes are underway in our laboratory.
