The Ancient Indian Republics

ABSTRACT The concept of republics in ancient India, known as Mahajanapadas, holds significant importance in understanding the political and social fabric of early Indian history. These republics, also called Ganas or Sanghas, were distinct from monarchies, as they were governed by elected assemblies or councils, often consisting of representatives from various clans or tribes. The Mahajanapadas period, which spanned from around 600 BCE to 300 BCE, was marked by the presence of both republican and monarchical states, with the republics being more democratic in nature.
