ABSTRACT Introduction: Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a well-established percutaneous modality for decreasing portal hypertension including variceal haemorrhage and refractory ascites. Complications of TIPS procedure include 30% incidence of new or worsened encephalopathy and a 15% incidence of other severe complications. In view of this, developing a postoperative nursing routine and training nurses about patient nutrition, early identification of potential complications, warning signs and communication skills to improve the education of patients becomes very important. Nurses should be aware of all the potential major complications associated with TIPS procedure.
