“The Effectiveness of Organized Teaching Program on Knowledge of School Teachers Regarding Juvenile Delinquency in Selected High Schools at Soura, Srinagar, Kashmir”

ABSTRACT
Background: One of the greatest problems in crime now a days is Juvenile Delinquency. The children act, 1960 in India defines delinquent as “a child who has committed an offence”. Juvenile means a boy who has not attained the age of 16 years and a girl who has not attained the age of 18 years. When a juvenile, below an age specified under a statute exhibits behavior which may prove to be dangerous to society and / or to himself, he may be called a Juvenile delinquent. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of organized teaching program on knowledge of school teachers regarding juvenile delinquency in selected high schools at Soura Srinagar Kashmir.
Methodology: A quantitative research approach with pre experimental one group pre test post test design was used. 50 School teachers selected by stratified disproportionate sampling technique at S.M Dedicated High school at Soura, Srinagar, Standard public high school Upper Soura and Ramzan memorial educational institute Soura Srinagar Kashmir. In this study, a total of 50 School Teachers were included fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A self-structured knowledge questionnaire was used as the research tool. Demographic variables such as age, gender, marital status, educational qualification, work experience, and Any previous experience in handling juvenile delinquents, information were obtained. Pre-test and post-test knowledge assessment regarding juvenile delinquency among School Teachers was also done.
Results: In pre-test, the level of knowledge score regarding Juvenile Delinquency among School Teachers was assessed. Based on those findings 31 (62%) of them had inadequate knowledge and 19 (38%) of them had moderate knowledge in pre-test. The overall mean of the pre - test was 17.50± 3.183. In post-test assessmen it was found that the maximum number of study subjects (96%) had adequate knowledge. Mean post-test knowledge score was 46.98 ± 3.273 which is higher than the mean pre-test knowledge score. So, it can be inferred that the mean difference of 29.48 or increase in the post-test knowledge score regarding juvenile delinquency was likely due to the implementation of the organized teaching program. The findings of the present study revealed that there was a statistically significant association between the pre-test knowledge scores of study subjects and previous experience in handling juvenile delinquents (p = 0.019) while no significant association was found between the pre-test knowledge scores of study subjects and other demographic variables like age (p = 0.552) gender (p = 0.119) marital status (p = 0.665), educational qualification (p = 0.345), and work experience (p = 403).
Conclusion: School Teachers knowledge is an important factor to manage and prevent juvenile delinquency among young children. This study reveals the importance of education programmes, skill training programmes, conferences, workshops, and educational meetings to enhance the school teachers knowledge regarding juvenile delinquency. The standard protocol for the prevention, and control of juvenile delinquency in schools to be formulated and revised periodically.
