The Impact of Academic Pressure and Psychological Stress on Aggression in Adolescents: A Study of Higher Secondary Students
Author Name : Saleeta Azhar Masoodi, Dr. Mohammad Zubair Kales
ABSTRACT Aggression in adolescents is a growing concern in educational and psychological contexts, with academic pressure and psychological stress identified as critical contributing factors. This study examines the relationship between academic stressors and aggressive behaviors among higher secondary students, focusing on emotional, physical, and social aggression. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from 300 students in Jammu, India, employing standardized scales to measure stress, anxiety, and aggression, along with interviews to explore personal experiences and triggers. The findings reveal that excessive academic pressure—stemming from societal expectations, parental demands, and competitive environments—significantly correlates with increased aggression. Emotional aggression, such as verbal outbursts and irritability, was more prevalent among students experiencing high levels of academic stress, while physical aggression was observed in students with long-term exposure to unaddressed pressures. Gender differences were notable, with male students showing higher tendencies toward physical aggression and female students exhibiting emotional aggression linked to anxiety and depression. Rural students faced additional challenges due to inadequate resources, leading to frustration and heightened aggression levels compared to their urban counterparts. The study highlights the need for interventions aimed at reducing academic pressure and providing mental health support in schools. Recommendations include integrating socioemotional learning programs, promoting healthy communication between parents and children, and equipping educators with tools to identify and manage aggression. By addressing these underlying factors, stakeholders can create supportive educational environments that enhance students' academic and emotional well-being.
