Author Name : Jasleen Kaur, Dr. Jasleen Kaur

ABSTRACT

Sustaining a healthy work environment is a major challenge for hospitals worldwide. Nursing professionals are often exposed to workplace bullying due to different personality traits of doctors.

Objectives: To study the antecedent (Personality) of workplace bullying in private hospitals in Punjab.

Method: Descriptive research design has been adopted. Purposive sampling technique has been used for selecting the 144 hospitals and data was collected from 546 private nurses in these hospitals using snow ball method of sampling.

Results: Overall level of bullying was found to be low (3.10, SD = .488). Among the five personality traits only conscientiousness has a significant effect on overall workplace bullying (b=.034, SE = .016, t = 2.13, p<.05), whereas extraversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, and openness to experience did not have significant effect on workplace bullying.

Conclusion: Overall personality of superiors caused only 5% of workplace bullying. It is quite obvious that the private hospitals are similar to proprietorship firm where owners play the key role and the scope of power and politic is low.
