The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri: A Study of Complex Relationship in Diaspora

ABSTRACT Diaspora is a well accepted issue of today’s world and diasporic literature has touched the global readers significantly. As a recognized writer of this genre Jhumpa Lahiri has been able to point out the immigrant insight of characters in her literature successfully. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri is the first and most important novel which is pervaded with the exiled men and women who are physically as well as mentally far away from their native land. In the novel Lahiri portrays mental difficulties and pains of the expatriate people who are struggling to be adjusted and accumulated in the alien country socially and culturally and the novel becomes a document of psychological analysis of characters. The migrants discover new experiences in their strange journey of life and they build up different relationships in the new space. The alien atmosphere, culture, manner and language compel their relationships to be intricate with the passage of time. In this paper, the researcher has endeavoured to focus on the complex relationship among the diasporic people in the novel, ‘The Namesake’ by Jhumpa Lahiri.
