The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Shaping Career Transitions: From Mid-Career to Retirement for IT Professionals

ABSTRACT Artificial intelligence is changing workplaces and the trajectories of careers within industries at breakneck speed. This paper discusses the role that AI plays in shaping career transitions for IT professionals, especially at the mid career to retirement transition. It examines three key independent variables: the level of AI adoption within the workplace, the access to AI-specific training and education, and the level of integration of AI within the workplace. These variables are studied based on the transition decisions for one's career that include upskilling, job change, and early retirement.The study hypothesizes that increased adoption of AI would lead to more proactive planning by IT professionals to change their careers by promoting upskilling and early retirement planning. The proposed training and education specific to AI will greatly improve the adaptability of professionals to the workplace changes induced by AI, making them change jobs or be promoted. Furthermore, job roles and responsibilities will be modified with the inclusion of AI technologies in the workplace, and hence, it is likely to change careers.The study provides actionable insights to organizations and policymakers to design effective strategies, training programs, and support systems to make career transitions in an AI-driven environment less challenging. It stresses the need to align AI adoption and training efforts with workforce needs for IT professionals to be more adaptable and resilient.It has explored the relationship between AI technologies and workforce dynamics in contributing to the deeper understanding of how organizations can support IT professionals in navigating their career pathways in an increasingly digitalized world.
