The Smog Episode during Diwali 2019 in Delhi: An Environmental and Public Health Perspective

ABSTRACT The recurrence of severe smog episodes in Delhi around the festival of Diwali remains a significant environmental and public health concern. The Diwali of 2019 witnessed one of the most severe deteriorations of air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR) in recent years. This article examines the factors contributing to the smog crisis during this period, its health impacts, and the policy responses that ensued. The discussion highlights both the immediate causes—such as firecracker emissions—and the systemic issues, including stubble burning and atmospheric conditions, which amplified the crisis.
