ABSTRACT : Gag reflex or pharyngeal reflex is an innate protective response of the human body that prevents entry of noxious substances into the GIT and respiratory systems. It occurs by the involuntary action of pharyngeal muscles following a complex reflex pathway. Developing intra-uterine, gag reflex is very sensitive at birth, gradually decreasing in intensity over time. However, in some people where the intensity of gag reflex does not diminish, called hypersensitive gag reflex, this can be a distressing problem. Hypersensitive gag is an issue that has plagued dentists for a very long time, gagging during procedures can affect the quality of dental treatment and compromise on dentist-patient relationship. This article includes sections describing the physiology and features of normal gag reflex followed by a section on hypersensitive gag management strategies.
