Thomas Munro and Ryotwari Settlement: Land Tax in the Baramahal Region and Ceded Districts

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is to find out the historical aspects of Ryotwari Revenue settlement and its experiment in Baramahal had great important in the revenue history of Madras Presidency. The Land Tax is the backbone of any Baramahal administration. Hence the English East India Company had aimed to collect the land revenue through different systems. The Company introduced the Zamindari, Mahalwari and Ryotwari revenue system. Ryotwari system was more practical and feasible than the other two systems. Thomas Munro was the author of this system. I am trying to bring out the genesis and the development of Ryotwari system defined through paper. With special reference to the Baramahal District of Madras Presidency.
