INTRODUCTION
The year 1947 marks an unparalleled catastrophic event in Indian history - the division of the subcontinent into two different countries: India and Pakistan. Becoming a turning point in the contemporary India’s history, partition was the culmination of long-standing separatist tendencies nurtured by imprudent and politically biased, bigoted, and short-sighted politicians, under the influence of false religious fervour. Before experiencing the exhilaration of Independence, the birth and transfer of power to two sovereign nations in the Indian sub-continent besmeared the nation in the barbarism and ghastliness of communal frenzy.
The division was not merely a political phenomenon, but it also had a human component. Those who were not responsible for any decision were affected by a high-level political decision. The Partition is the most terrible event in living memory due to the lasting damage and unprecedented magnitude of violence and dislocation of people, their humiliation and risky trips across newly constituted boundaries, and the disintegration of family and community lives.
