Trends of Urbanization in Ballia City, Uttar Pradesh, India: A Geographical Analysis for Sustainable Development

ABSTRACT: The phenomenon of urbanization has been mainly understood in the context of large cities. Thereby, it is of imminent interest to contextualize the existence of the phenomenon of urbanization in small cities. In the era of globalization, small cities provide ample scope for growth and sustainable development. The current study attempts to comprehend urbanization in the Ballia city of Uttar Pradesh, India, from 1991 to 2023.In this study, Ballia City has been described in detail through a SWOT analysis for sustainable development. Despite the limitations, proper planned economic development in Ballia can be influential. Therefore, the study suggests policies for sustainable development and growth in small cities. It was cleared that the study area has a low growth rate, indicating that these cities are stagnating mostly owing to a lack of employment /economic prospects and their inner position.
