ABSTRACT
Voicemail is a method of storing voice messages on a computer so that the intended receivers can recover them later. Callers leave brief messages on digital media (or, in some older systems, on analogue recording tape). Voicemail was first created for telephony as a way to prevent missed calls and to make call screening easier. Voicemail has been more connected with the Internet in recent years, allowing users to receive incoming messages on both traditional computers and tablets and mobile phones. Microsoft Exchange is a popular voicemail platform for desktop and laptop computers. Voicemail messages can be listened to or read as audio (Mp3) or text. The user just clicks on an inbox item to play a voicemail or view it as text, just as they would with a regular e-mail message.
The merging of voicemail and e-mail is a particularly fascinating advance. For example, Google Voice can convert voice communications into text that can be viewed on mobile and tablet devices. Google Voice also offers low-cost or free international messaging. Users can create unique greetings for different types of callers. Address books can be shared via e-mail, a landline phone, or a mobile phone. Google Voice and similar apps function in the same way that voice-enabled e-mail does in reverse. Voicemail-to-text, voice-enabled e-mail, and unified messaging proponents claim that these technologies have essentially broken down the barriers between data and traditional voice networks.
