Weaving Community in Odisha: A Study on Mehers’ Community in Odisha

ABSTRACT Introduction: Bhulia Mehers are the dominant community of weavers in Odisha. They reside in towns of Sambalpur, Baragarh, Sonepur, Barapalli and adjacent villages of Jhimiliminda, Lurupalli, Kadabadhal, Barahaguda, Sagarpalli, Subelaya, Tikrapara and other places in Odisha. They appear the title Mehers is also used by other weaving castes as well. The present research work will highlight the comprehensive study on the Weaving Community in Odisha especially on “Bhulia Mehers”. It will cover the diversity of “BANDHA Textiles” as well as their traditional culture , socio-economic profiles, activities, mechanisms of productions, distribution of jobs by the weavers’ at different clusters in Odisha.
