Women Empowerment through MGNREGA: A Socio-Economic Analysis of Kozhikode District

ABSTRACT The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) plays a vital role in enhancing women’s empowerment by ensuring wage-based employment in rural India. This study examines its impact on women in Kozhikode district, Kerala, where female participation in the scheme is notably high. Based on primary data from 150 women across various panchayats, the study explores economic, social, and personal dimensions of empowerment. Findings show that MGNREGA has contributed significantly to financial independence, household decision-making, and increased social respect among women workers. Participation in the scheme has also improved confidence, legal awareness, and involvement in community activities.
